The National Register of Mental Health Consumers and Carers

The National Register of Mental Health Consumers and Carers is made up of over 60 mental health consumer and carer representatives with experience working as representatives and training in leadership, advocacy, policy development, communication and other topics. These representatives are available to be members on national committees, boards, planning groups and evaluation groups as consumer or carer representatives.

National Register and National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum Workshop

The members of the National Register took part in a two-day representative skills training workshop in April 2008 and 2009 to enhance their skills. All members of the National Register have experience working as a representative and have undergone training in leadership, advocacy, policy development, communication and a range of other relevant topics.

The 2008-09 National Register Project built on the findings and experiences of the 2007-08 project, with an enhanced skills development workshop in April 2009. In addition to National Register members, the workshop was open to members of the National Mental Health Consumer Carer Forum (NMHCCF) to attend. This was a key step in developing stronger links between the NMHCCF and National Register members.

The National Register of Mental Health Consumers and Carers is now an ongoing project at the Mental Health Council of Australia and members receive ongoing training through an annual two-day workshop.

The Carer Engagement Project

The Carer Engagement Project had two parts: workshops throughout 2008-09 for mental health carers held across Australia; and ongoing annual monitoring of mental health carer issues.
